Google Maps And The E71: A Match Made In Heaven

I've been using Google Maps on the Nokia E71 for a few days now and couldn't be happier. It runs much faster and smother than Nokia Maps, although it uses data which might not be ideal for some people. If you have an unlimited data plan like myself than it doesn't matter.

Google Maps uses GPS and your phones signal to get your location. Upon starting the application your location is found almost instantly. If your on the freeway, you can check the traffic by pressing 7. You'll see either red, yellow, or green. I'm sure you know what the colors stand for.

Zooming in and out is a breeze by pressing the 1 and 3 key. You can scroll around the maps and then push 0 to get back to your current location. Keep in mind that you right now you have to press the shift key at the same time when using those shortcuts. I don't think Google recognizes the E71 as a qwerty phone with their latest version. Probably because the E71 is brand new. I'm hoping in the future you won't have to hold the shift key + shortcut to use these tools. It's really not good when your trying to drive and get directions (which I don't recommend).

If you need to search for something near you or get directions you are using the most powerful search engine in the world. Typing "gas station" gets you all the stations nearest to your location. Pick the one you and you you have tons of options. You can call directly from the application, go to website, get directions to and from the selection, and below that you are presented with the rest of the search results. You also have the option to "save to contacts" which is a huge plus for certain businesses or contacts that your always in touch with.

Google Maps can also find your location buy using your phones signal. It's hard getting a GPS lock in some buildings and the phone's signal is an approximate location, usually within about 1200 meters. Handy if your sitting at the DMV and decide your gonna try and find a place to eat. You don't need your exact location, but the general location would be perfect. Satellite views are also available.As for directions, you get step by step instructions. You go to the next step by pressing 6 and back by pressing 4. It doesn't update turn by turn. There is no option for voice guidance, but hopefully Google implements these features in the future.

To download Google Maps, go to http://www.google.com/ on your E71 and scroll down to where it says Gmail, Maps, and more. Click the Maps link.

  1. The only thing that's missing is a turn-by-turn audio directions, but I'm sure it'll be included someday too : )

    I wonder if someday GPS navigation applications make use of the built-in voice synthesizer that many of the E-series phones have. That way they wouldn't increase in size as much as e.g. Nokia Maps that uses .WAV files.

  2. Yeah hopefully Google adds audio turn by turn directions, but I hope they create their own voices because I hate the voices that are built into Nokia phones.

  3. random question - not sure if you can help. I just downloaded google maps, and my current location, according to the phone, is a couple of blocks away... Any idea why that is? Thanks in advance!

  4. Hi. It's because GPS is not enabled. Go into the tools and select "Use GPS". It will take about 10 seconds to lock if you get a good signal, sometimes faster.

    If you don't use GPS the application is using cell towers and giving you an approximate location.

    I find the Google maps a great help on my E71 too, especially since the Nokia maps are not too accurate on search in India. My question though - does Google maps NOT provide directions for India? It is pretty sharp on locating a search, but when asked for directions, it says NO DIRECTION AVAILABLE. Your feedback would help. Thanks.

  10. hi i jus installed google maps on my e71 and it works like a breeze..i have yet not been able to get the nokia maps thing workin but google was up and runnin in a few seconds and this was only usin the wifi at my university..i guess once it gets some satellite signal will be able to get my location accurately(i tried this indoors)...as for ur query i think google hasnt yet included directions for india(i guess its too confusing for them..lol)...its the same wen u go to google maps on the net as well..

  13. Hi. Google maps is great but i have to frequently visit places with no network coverage. Can the maps of an area be stored in the E71 to be used when there is no network coverage.

    does it receive data through the service provider,which mean u have to pay or by satelites,which means free?
    like Garmin,it uses satelites so is free.
    clear things up plz.

  17. hey e71 users. so i really need you guys help. i want to dl the google maps for my e71, but my question is, if i unchecked "assisted GPS", and use google maps, will i stil get charged?

    as stated above...

    The certificate check option creates trouble if you try to install unsigned applications(applications not recognised by nokia, not tested etc...). Go to Tools -->> Installations-->App mgr.((Application MAnager)) -->Options--> Settings--> Software Installations -->ALL/////// And Change Online Certificate check --> OFF.... Hope this helps..

  21. Google maps suddenly stopped working.
    System provider 3 UK.

    When ever Google maps is launched I get "Connection Time Out"
    Previously been using maps for 6 months with no problems.

    All other Web & Google functions work.

  23. When using the 'get directions' navigation why does the screen not auto scroll to show my position on the map the whole time. What I mean is once I have driven off the map I have to press 6 to get it to change to the next map so I can see my position again....not great

  24. pitty gmaps and all the google app's are using al of your call records and private call data also 3rd parties are involved. So be aware if u like that ur calls are registred specific data will be send to google and 3rd parties.

  25. Is it possible to download maps for google.maps in advance over WIFI? - so I don't have to download them over the mobile network (EDGE/3G), it would be much cheaper for me :o)

  26. you need to use nokia's web browser and not Opera. If using opera you won't see the link as your phone won't be correctly detected.

  27. u wont have to hold the shift key if u want to zoom.just double press the function button on the right of shift button.that activates the number function of the qwerty pad.hope it helps you...

  28. i hav been trying to find map of my current place (jammu)..which is not displayed by nokia maps..i thought may be nokia disabled my maps cause i havnt bought any licencse..but when i search frm my pc.i found da same problem..

    when i find dis article..and i quickly tried dis..
    n guys ..i am very happy now...dis goggle app is really awesome.. 10 out of 10
