Always Install Applications & Themes On The E71 Phone Memory - It's For The Best
Topics: E71 Settings, E71 Tips 22 commentsI can't stress this enough. If you want your phone to run smoothly and efficiently you'll follow this simple rule. Always install applications, themes, & games on the PHONE MEMORY. The Nokia E71 has more than enough phone memory to install everything oni it, without having to use a memory card. It's harder on the phone when it has to access a different drive like the memory card to read and write constant data. Keep your memory card solely for all your media like videos, music, photos, etc. You can even store your downloaded Maps from the Nokia Maps application on the memory card.
Think of it like this. Would you install programs to run on Windows on an external hard drive? No. Your computer will work harder to access and it's just not efficient.
Mathew from the popular mobile blog Darla Mack has recently posted a great article backing up my thoughts on this topic. He covers three parts - Frequency, Start Up, and Portability. He notes that in previous days the memory card was required for applications because there wasn't much space on the device memory. But times have changed and now there is more than enough. Click here to jump over and read that article.
What do you think? Do you have a different opinion? I would love to hear the other side of a theory.

I would agree to your opinion but I have some comments.
A. there are sd cards and sdhc cards (the second one are much faster)
B. note that the internal memory has to hold all running programs as well as buffers like borwser internal cash, contacts and more.
C. once the application is running - it's running one the phone memory so it could be that the loading times is faster but the phone will not act slower.
D. I prefer slower load time (if any, b/c the E71 is very fast in compare to previous symbian phones) on os problem of “out of memory error”
my advice is to use your extension card (by sdhc fast card) and leave your ~100mb for the system.

I think this is bad advice for some apps such as Profimail which save mail to the same folder as the app. I maxed out my internal e71 memory while trying to do an initial sync with my Gmail Sent folder.

How about apps like 'MagicKey' which mess with the OS a little.. would be considered dangerous to install to internal Mem?

I have always saved to memory card on the basis that if the new program causes problems such as freezing my mobile I can take the card out and reboot without the problem program. Only once I am happy with the new program will I consider moving it to internal memory.

if asking for an option where to install an app, i always choose the card option. never had problems with speed, freeze etc. as long as it's compatible with the device.

I've never noticed a problem with running apps off the 1gb card that came with my E71. I run VBAG (Gameboy advance emulator) and the roms off there and I can't think of a most intense application, and it runs full speed, A-OK.
I'd rather leave the phones internal memory as free as possible for cahce/etc.

I recently had to clean up an installation of an application that caused problems when starting up the phone. Luckily, I hardly ever install programs nor themes to the phone memory, because I had to access some system folders to delete some corrupt files. It was possible with a card reader and a PC, but not with the File Manager or LonelyCatGames' X-Plore for example.
Same thing with themes: After installing them the Symbian file system - after a backup restoration for example - has been corrupted so that the themes aren't removable via the Application Manager anymore, thus they must be removed manually (which is a bit complicated). Again, after experiencing these kind of problems with Symbian (and Nokia's Content Copier.. not a single 100% successful backup restoration.. yay), I haven't had the courage to install (or just try out trial programs) any non-critical applications directly on the phone memory.

Don't agree. I install everything on card memory. I want my phone memory for currently running applications and internet cache. Period.

Glad you guys way is working for you. If you start having problems good luck.
As for saving your internal memory for running applications. The internal device memory and RAM are two seperate things. I can bring my internal drive down to 10mb and still have full RAM available.

Are you kidding me? 110 MB of memory is not enough, phone memory are only for my calendar, contacts, messages etc. Besides, I don't wanna install corrupt files on my phone. Everything I download must be save on card

I've had Nokia Sambian phones for years. You usually want to mix with the installing to phone or memory card. Themes, of course install to phone so you can hot swap mem card. SOME apps work better on a card than the phone, like said earlier, media programs and mail programs. So its take a little trial and error sometimes.

refering to the topic: Always install applications, themes, & games on the PHONE MEMORY.
well, logically since the phone was manufactured in a way that it can use an external memory card then there shouldnt be any problem... if not, then my 8gb sd card is a waste..
all applications, games and anything that i can save or back up, i'll save it into my external sd card and yet to experience any problem...

That's right, there's a bit of trial an error on deciding what goes where, I agree that themes (or at least your favorite one) works better on the internal memory, but Symbian is designed to automatically switch to a default theme (or even shut down a program) if you remove the SD card (just follow the normal ejection procedure and you'll be fine). Other apps like some answering machines recommend the internal memory for better performance.
By the way, Have'nt you guys installed some apps that don't even ask for installation destination? I have, so if I'm presented with an option at installation I assume it's fine to do so either way.
Cheers!

Hi,
Not sure where to post this. I bought a E71 in India (Gurgaon) on 16th Aug 2008. By 22nd August 2008, I started having problems with the scroll key (pressing it for downward scroll resulted in opening apps instead of scrolling) and some of the keys on the keyboard. I took it to Nokia Care center (Sheetla Communications) and they informed that this is a hardware problem. Request for a replacement fell on deaf ears. The call center later informed that the phone is repaired. However, I am yet to get it back. A couple of visits to the care center turned useless. Calling them is not usefull too - they don't pick the phone. A later check on the net was interesting - so many complains about service quality and product quality. At this rate, I am sure that Nokia would start loosing market share.

I'm using Opera Mini more than the Nokia web browser.
About the Nokia one, even when I set Clear Privacy data/All, I still get a few websites listed when I partially enter the URL of a site I am about to visit. So the History is not totally deleted even when I set Clear Privacy data/All.
No such problem with Opera Mini though. So it looks like I have to manually trawl through the folders to permanently delete History listing in Nokia web browser.
Where do I start looking for the files to delete?
One flaw in Opera Mini is that it doesn't allow user to create folders to organise websites. Have suggested to the developers to allow this feature in the next version. Hopefully, they will.

Solved one of the issues I posted for assistance 15 mins ago.
Do not need to do hardware reset for card formatting. Went to Menu>Tools>memory and it said card corrupted and then lo and behold, it asked whether I want to format the card. So I did. I still need help with two other issues though...

If I have apps installed on my SDMicro card (and I do) then can you explain what to do when replacing the card with a larger one.. do I need to uninstall my apps and reinstall to phone memory? Can I just use my PC to copy the contents of the old card to the new card?
Thanks,
Anthoyn.
