Conversation On The E71: Get Threaded SMS Similar To Gmail

One of my favorite features of Gmail is how it's emails are threaded based on contacts and subjects. I believe that Blackberry devices have a similar SMS system. Nokia is developing a freeware application called Conversation which gives you this functionality on the Nokia E71.

According to the Nokia page,
Conversation is a messaging application that allows you to follow your message conversations, which it organizes into threads with individual contacts. The application also makes it easier to reply to messages and continue with conversations.

After installation, the application will appear in your device as an application shortcut, and as a new tab in your Contacts application.

Right now there is no version for the Nokia E71 officially supported, but I have the E90 version installed and it works fine. I haven't seen any glitches or problems at all. You can assign it as a shortcut on your standby screen. I have mine as the long press email key which works great with my setup. The email key takes me to the email application, and if I hold it down for 2 seconds it takes me to the Conversation application where I can read all my text messages.

I hope that someday Nokia implements this as the default messaging application but it doesn't. However, when you open a message in Conversation it will be marked as read in the default messaging system. Another quirk is when a new text arrives and you want to click the notification to read it you will be taken to the default message app. Now I just end up going straight to my Conversation shortcut.

Have you tried this application out yet?

Click here to install Conversation on your Nokia E71. Make sure to follow the instructions and download the E90 version.

  1. Is there an antivirus software to protect my beloved e71 from the threats of the digital world.

  2. Yes there is software that they make you pay for. It's a big waste of money. Symbian S60 3rd Edition is one of the most secure operating systems in the world. The only one that can harm your phone is yourself. Don't install applications that look shady. Simple as that.

  3. Installed it few days ago, and I think there's a bug / conflict with the Contacts function. Causes Contacts to not launch. Decided to remove it after 1 day. I don't recommend it.

  5. To the person that had problems with Conversation, did you install the support package? Most of Nokia's betalabs apps need to have the support package installed to system memory first and then the actual app, Conversation in this case.

  7. I wish it would use a really tiny font and thinner rows so that more threads would fit on the screen. The iPhone talk bubble implementation would also bee cool :)

I've got a fairly good eyesight so I wish there would be a "tiny" font for other views too :)

  8. Very good for messaging, but what for have they integrated it into contacts?! I don' know. Have the summertime theme with dark blue background. Now when I open contacts, can't see black letters on dark back... Conversation for S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 installed. Is it the same in other versions?

  10. Question: I send a lot of SMS and I need the scheduled text feature. Does E71 have that feature? You type in your message and note what date and time you want the message sent.
Would really really appreciate it if you can answer this. Will get one if it has this feature.

  12. I have the conversation appl and Im not too crazy about it. The options are very limited, there is no settings to play around with and only 1 look. They definitely need to come up with a better and more effective version. The conversation is a must in my opinion.

  14. hi. i'm using e61i and planning to get the e71 soon, i have the conversation app installed and running smoothly on my e61i, i just want to know if i can use the same conversation app of my e61i to e71?

  15. I have the exact same problem as DeeQ above. Phone does not let me install Inernet Services Support Package 1.01 (the phone already has v 1.02 and does not allow it to be replaced by 1.01), then the installer for Conversations complains about ISSP not being present but installs anyway. However, the application does not run well, when I try to delete a message it hangs up the entire phone, and the behavior is overall erratic. I love the idea of a threaded text message app, anyone have any idea how to get it running?

  16. I have experienced the same problems as the previous posters, phone freezes, resets, pixelated display after i installed Conversation. It only happens once in a while tho, my solution when it does, I power down the phone, wait 15-20 seconds, then power up again, after that my e71 is back to normal.
