Tip: Do A Hard Reset On Your E71 If You Start Having Problems

Is your Nokia E71 becoming too cluttered? Are you having weird problems that you didn't have when you first got your E71?

You can try to do a hard reset to restore it back to factory settings. All your contacts, messages, calls, applications, themes > everything will be gone. So BEWARE. Backup your important stuff first. Your memory card will be fine, so anything there will be saved. However, if you have applications installed on the memory card, I recommend deleted those as well.

I always tell people to install applications and themes on the phone memory always! Your phone will run faster, as will the applications. Leave the memory card for your media.

Anyways, to perform a hard reset on the Nokia E71 you do this...

Type *#7370# from the standby screen while your phone is on.
It will ask for the lock code which is 12345 unless you have previously changed it. Make sure you do this right, because if you do it too many times the wrong way you can lock up your phone.

And that's it. Have fun re-installing all of your applications and themes.
Hopefully this helps you out if your having problems, or if you just want to clean out your phone.

AmI right? Whether you mistype your lock code three times, the e71 - security concerns - do a hard reset itself, deleting all data. So you must have a backup of your phone if you use lock code.

The locked phone in your pocket or your funny friends can easily reset your locked phone without knowing wny codes.

everytime i get a new Nokia phone, i systematically hard reset it before installing anything, so i am assured that it is "factory status" before any customization.

    @Mike:
i usually install everything (themes, apps, tones) onto my memory card instead of the phone memory. this is because few years back, it was advised to free-up phone memory as much as possible,so the phone can breathe easier on its capacity/load. and since im using Micro SDHC(class 6), i think read/write speed of the memory card vs. phone memory is barely noticeable.any comments are welcome.

  • August 4, 2008 10:33 PM

@ yes you are right i think. its good to always back up your data often. i am scared to test it out lol.

@ Kulam. I've seen various opinions, but my rule of thumb has always been to install everything on the phone memory because it can access the programs faster. sort of like it's better to install a program on your computer's hard drive rather than an external hard drive. But maybe you are having better success the other way. I've ran into problems before doing that method.

I'm kinda new to this. How would i backup my phone?

    Thanks.

  • August 5, 2008 10:06 AM

A good way to backup your phone is to use Nokia PC Suite. It came in the box.

  • August 5, 2008 11:29 PM

    @Mike:

seems your logic is quite sound. a lot of Nokia phone users are indeed using phone memory for their Apps and Themes installation, and only miscellaneous (pics, videos, tones) are stored in the mem card. will try this from now.thanks for the tip!

    Hi All, Mike
I managed to uninstall the multiscanner from the storage card hoping to reinstall it on main memory, and I did the same with MIMO. How can I get to reinstall these applications back?

    Thanks

  • August 10, 2008 4:09 PM

I would just like to share the thing regarding the lock code being entered wrong more than 3 or 5 times. This doesnt reset the phone at all. I've tried it and all it does is to lock the phone for 5 minutes. Meaning you can't unlock the phone even if you entered the correct lock code unless the 5 minutes are up. Just my two cents =). Btw I bought my E71 in the Philippines I'm not sure though if the my version of the firmware/software has an effect on how the lock code behaves.

  • August 12, 2008 10:48 AM

@ Vince... thanks for clarifying that information.

@ other posters... I don't know how to get these applications back. I'll look into it for you. This is why we always backup our phones. I'm one to talk I just lost my entire computer hard drive.

  • August 13, 2008 1:07 AM

My E71's Menu function sometimes freeze when I press it! Anybody knows something about that beside hard resetting cause seems like to much of a hassle having to re-install everything!

  • August 14, 2008 1:26 PM

    @ Veelayat...

Sorry I don't know what else to tell you. Have you been installing any weird apps on your phone. I don't know why it would do that.

  • August 15, 2008 9:53 AM

i was playing around with my e71 and by mistake i installed some antivirus software that was freezing the phone on the booting, so i could NOT do anything.... i called NOKIA to see if there was any way to start the phone in a SAFE MODE, they said that theres no such in the e71, so, the tch support guy suggested me to do the hard reset, i was ok with it, since i had the phone just for a week, so it wasn't nothing much to lose. Since i wasn't able to do anything on the phone i could not use the hard reset code.... the guy told me that i had to send the phone to repair, which would take at least 10 days... :( .... i was sure that it wasn't the solution i needed, so i googled for another solution, i found the hard reset steps for the e66 and i tried them:

Turn on the phone while pressing "3" + "*" and the GREEN button!!!!!!!! easy as that... it hard reset the phone to factory defaults.

there should be something wrong with those at Nokia Tech Support!!!!! i dislike them from now on!

  • August 17, 2008 1:43 PM

    @ Mike

I have performed a Hard Reset. It seems to me it has resolved the problem!

    Thanks for the tips...

Do you know of a Linux application that syncs with Nokia E71?

  • August 29, 2008 1:47 PM

For sync the Nokia E71 with Linux, I use goosync, to sync the phone's calendar with google calendar.. Then you can find some tutorial for syncronizing Evolution with your Google Calendar..It's not as hard as it seems.. ;)

    Hi.
I have Nokia E71 with romanian language suport which is best for me. I want to play with it, install tons of programs and then to keep just the important ones.
Now I wonder, if I will do a hard reset it will preserve the language pack?

  • October 19, 2008 10:32 AM

@Ioana Tara - you can reset your phone with no changes in terms of languages pack. I did it few times by now... :) Salutari!

  • October 20, 2008 8:16 AM

  • November 19, 2008 1:29 PM

my phone came with tetris and tiger woods installed on it. i heard that if you do a hard reset they will be erased.

will the back up on nokia pc suite save these apps? is there any way to save the .sis files off of the phone before i do the reset.

I am facing an unusual problem that i changed the phone lock code from 12345 to a custom 5 character numeric code. However when i try to replace the code back, it accepts the current code (custom value) and then when i give the new code as 12345 an error message stating “Code Error” is shown. I also noticed that i cannot provide any new code.

However when i reset the phone the new custom code is accepted, indicating its not a problem. Would appreciate if someone can help me sort this problem.

    Mike
Just got a new E71, after loading lastest firmware on now I can't get into my contacts via key short cut. Have tried factory hard reset as above after I type in #7370# I get a message "USSD Format is Error, Please Contract with the Operation", now what??
Everything seems to work ok except my contacts, have backed all my data ready to have another go at restoring to factory setting. Any ideas??

  • January 3, 2009 2:37 AM

so when you say it removes everything does this mean all the original ringtones, original videos, default wallpapers etc. will ALL be gone?

  • January 7, 2009 1:41 AM

Thanks, sorted my problem out (The "factory reset" option, in settings, doesn't seem to actually reset it). The code on here worked a treat.

  • February 2, 2009 5:00 PM

I installed F Secure and it disabled my E71! could not use the Messaging App or App Manager or even Modes, it keeps telling me those where already in use.. It also killed my Nokia Email.

I tried soft reset, tried factory reset, tried hard reset *#7370#, all of which did NOT work. Although it reset my phone, the hard reset did not CLEAN it, i.e. remove all apps apart from those installed by the factory.

The only thing that worked for my E71 was what ALEJANDRO_GIRALDO posted:

"Turn on the phone while pressing "3" + "*" and the GREEN button!!!!!!!! easy as that... it hard reset the phone to factory defaults."

Then I checked the apps list and it was clean. I then turned off the phone, removed the battery for approx 5mins and put my phone together again.

Now I have a phone that is much like how I got it brand new!

  • February 15, 2009 2:47 AM

  • March 7, 2009 3:09 PM

    hi

i just bought an E71 and was so happy with it until I encountered a few bugs with my music library which froze very often... I thought it was caused by a "corrupted memory card" so I tried to encrypte it...BAS IDEA MAYBE

Now my little piece of nokia refuses to switch on even with the 3 * green button tips... I am so disapointed...

How long do I have to push 3*green button because the phone screen remain dark after a little moment... I don't reach the Nokia logo screen !!

I need help please please please

    Lolo

  • March 7, 2009 6:05 PM

ok, i screwed up. the unlocked nokia e71-2 i bought from amazon in january was acting erratically, so i backed everything up using nokia pc *#7370#, and then did a hard reset w/ the green-* combo. it asked for my security code, so i entered 12345.

    it didn't work.

apparently, in a fit of paranoia, i'd changed it to something more secure. and it is a *lot* more secure - in fact, i don't even know it . . .

any suggestions (other than "use it as a paperweight") would be gratefully accepted.

I suddenly woke up this morning and I could not access my "Installations" folder. But when I manually searched for the apps I've installed, they were still in my phone memory. Then even worse, opening one item opens a different one. I think I'm going to stop installing random apps for a while. :/

...So thanks for this really helpful post! My phone is now back to normal.

  • June 16, 2009 11:37 PM

I laugh, when I read "back up your phone." Using what? If you back up the phone, to the memory card, you will find (as I have) that you can't restore from that backup. Failure 100% of the time. If you back up, using Nokia PC Suite, you'll find that it doesn't restore many of the applications and practically any of the user data. Again, failure 100% of the time. If you need to reset your phone, you will need to reinstall every piece of software, reconfigure every setting, and pray that all the data was saved to the phone's memory card or is on your PC. Assuming that data corruption on the memory card wasn't one of the reasons you had to reinstall everything. It will take you hours and you will need to do it a couple of times a year, if you're lucky.

I have a large memory card, since I have to carry the installation files for every application on the phone, ready for the time - on the road, at home, wherever - that my Nokia E71 fails me.

And they call this a "smartphone."

  • June 22, 2009 8:26 AM

I'VE GOT A WAY IF YOUR E71 IS LOCKED AND NO CODE WOUDLD WORK DIAL 112 IT WILL REMOVE THE LOCK FEILD AFTER *#7370#

  • June 26, 2009 4:14 AM

Thanks a ton for the tip. I restored the program to factory settings multiple times, only to realize that it didnt remove all the cr@p that I had downloaded from nokia store!
I have done a hard reset now and I find it simpler than my HTC Diamond, that's where I come from!!
    Bookmarked the site now!

  • June 27, 2009 1:51 PM

    HI everyone

I have a safe suggestions that might be usefull for every body.

HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE APPS FROM e71

-Go to your games (installed from factory) like if you were to play and surprise! The apps icons tha you don't want are next to Tetris and Tiger Wood games. Select them and hit options, hit remove and that is it. You don't need to reset your e71.

Good luck all, hope it works as it did for mee.
Great site Thanks for your time.

  • June 28, 2009 3:24 AM

    Hi,

The "factory settings" reset and *#7370# reset are entirely different! The former does NOT remove your apps and data, but the latter literally "formats" your phone!

Now, I had to "format" my E71 because Nokia Internet Radio is just so buggy after it updated to version 1.16. Now, it buffers severely, the phone reboots itself, and the worst thing is, the new NIR CANNOT be removed/uninstalled, and I CANNOT find any /sys/bin files for it anywhere using File Manager.

Now, if someone can show me how to REALLY format the phone and perhaps flash it with a new firmware, that would be much, much appreciated.

    Thanks!!

p/s. Can we actually load Android or the latest Symbian OS on this baby called the E71??

To all people who have changed their security code and now can't remember it: no, there's no way around it as far as I know. And no, it's not Nokia's fault. It's called a security code for a reason, what would it be worth if you could bypass as you see fit?

  • December 5, 2009 4:42 AM

You have a great blog and have been the inspiration for my blog.

I wanted to share that *#7780# allows you to do a soft reset - meaning your profile is not deleted but the phone is reset to factory settings.

  • December 9, 2009 5:52 AM

I dropped my E71 from about 15 inches and now it will not start up. When I turn it on the vibration confirmation happens, the screen and keyboard are backlighted for a few seconds... and then nothing. The software does not kick in. Is there anything I can do to save it? I have tried the green3* combination suggested previously, but nothing happened.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

  • December 22, 2009 12:49 PM

I just did this hard reset..it didn't reboot right away. It restarted and from the restart it appears to do some background tasks, and therefore doesn't show a screen or anything.
It took about 5 to 10 mins for the normal
NOKIA screen to show up, but it did and it reset back to it's default configuration !

  • December 29, 2009 2:14 AM

Thanks for the unlock code. Just making sure I have reset my phone and deleted all data before I send it away.

  • January 31, 2010 12:27 PM

For E71x, the hard reset/format key combo is this: Press "Shift+Space+Backspace" simultaneously while you switch on the device. This worked for my E71x and not "*+3+Green".

!!Warning!! Hard reset will ERASE every thing on your device, so plz. backup your device before you attempt this.

Hi, I have just upgraded my E71 software into 400, so it's like a brand new phone with better applications (yay!). Then i used content copier to set my phone just like the way it was before (the most important part is the contacts). And the problem came. I cannot open my phone book, but all the contacts are there. When i press "open", nothing happens. Anybody can help, please?
    thx a bunch.

I have an unbranded E71 which is locked and I can't unlock it.
    I've tried the green+*+3...
I've tried 211 and keep apologizing to the emergency operator...
I've downloaed Nokia care suite 1.3.6 and it crashes after 50% download...

    Any ideas?

I bought my E71 in Brazil and the unlocked the phone for me, but now I moved to Finland and want to use the phone here with a diferent company (sonera). How I can get rid of the other operator logo and all the info they put into the phone. If I do a factory restore it will solve the problem? i afraid of locking the phone.

    Thanks,

    Flavia

I've also done the *#7370# & 3* dial or OK and nothing.

had the forgotten lock code problem, but the 3*dial start up reset the phone completely. result!

    for those struggling:

    turn off phone
press and hold 3 and * keys at the same time
press and hold the green phone
    press power button

Have a look at this blog. It saved my E71 after doing a restore after a firware upgrade it shat itself.

This guy says to turn the phone off. Hold down green phone button + 3 + *, and turn it on while doing this. Hold the buttons until the nokia logo has disappeared. (or for me it was until it asked for a PIN). This reset the defaults but luckily most things were on my mem card so didn't loose too much.Take a look

A little annoying that this article doesn't mention the possibility of using * + 3 + green button + power button, which is probably when you're going to be in the greatest need of resetting (i.e. the phone doesn't boot up). Oh well further googling reveals such things.

Unlocking your cell phone has become very cheaper now a days, perhaps you should go for those which really benefits you.

Check the above one and google some. This was from where I got my 3 cel phones unlocked. The above one will help you, I believe.
