Check Out My New Toy...

The gorgeous Acer Aspire One netbook. It's basically a mini laptop and extremely mobile. Paired with my Nokia E71 it makes for a great combo. I use PC Suite to tether my E71's 3g internet to the Aspire One and it works flawlessly, even over bluetooth. There are two versions of it, one with a 3 cell battery/120gb HD and one with a 6 cell/160gb HD. Amazon has the 6 cell version on sale right now for $319 with free shipping. Comes with Windows XP, 1gb RAM, usb ports, VGA out, the works. Below are a few specs...
Product Features
1.6GHz Atom N270
1GB DDR2 SDRAM
1.3 Megapixel camera, SDHC and multi-format media readers
802.11b/g, Ethernet, three USB 2.0, VGA, and 3.5mm audio out
160GB hard drive (2.2 pounds)

Really worth the money if you have the extra cash, it's a powerful little device. I've seen people us it as their main computer with the VGA out cable into a large monitor. The decent RAM, large hard drive, and Windows XP makes this possible.

I'll be doing a mini review of the Aspire paired with my Nokia E71 in a few days. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Free Themes: The New Ovi Icons Make Their Way To E71, Almost Complete

Well it's been quite some time since I've been able to update you guys with the latest and great rumblings in the Nokia smartphone world, work has been hitting me hard daily, leaving me with no eyeball moisture to get me through another hour of staring at the computer screen. With that said, I'm back in business and will have some time to get some articles in this weekend. There's a TON of juice to talk about, with all the latest Eseries devices been announced and such. But for now, I'll just show you a few themes that I've had my eye on.

When it comes to themes on my E71, I like going to the extreme. It's either gotta be an all black theme, with very good contrast fonts and icons, or a very bright theme, usually in the form of blue, yellow, or green. Never white.

Bright And Vibrant...

For the bright, vibrant theme I bring you Light Yellow by Larsson. This guy Larsson has been at the top of my themes list for a few months now, mainly because of the awesome Ovi icon set he's been using, the same icons we see on the Nokia 5800 touch. Here is the screenshot...

It looks great on my E71, nearly every folder and built in application icon is replaced. However, we still have the problem of the email envelopes on the homescreen showing as calendar entries instead. This is common with most 3rd party themes with custom icons, and something I've learned to deal with, especially when I switch my E71 to the "weekend" Mode and shut off my email.

Another bright and vibrant...

The official Nokia blog called Conversations has released their official Ovi Theme called "Ovi Blue". It seems to not have replaced all the E71 icons, but almost (unless I'm just crazy and it is all of them). Also, we still have the same email icon problem on the homescreen. Check out the screenshot (stolen from Symbian-Guru because I don't have the screenshot app installed yet)...

It also comes with an "Audio Theme" which includes a new ringtone, message sound, and screensaver. Thanks Nokia Conversations!

Regarding the email icon homescreen problem...

I have still not found a 3rd party icon set that also keeps the email icons on the E71 homescreen the same, instead of changing them to calendar icons. It's really annoying, and if you want to get around it you can install the "DFLT", "DEF", or "DEFAULT" version of your favorite theme. Most theme makers include this in the .zip file. It just uses all the default icons. If anyone has seen a theme that resolves this problem with custom icons, let us know.

Happy Thursday everyone! See you this weekend, and maybe even sooner.

Sync Google Contacts With Your E71 The Official & Free Way

Today Google has released Google Sync, and clear cut way to sync your Google contacts with S60 devices such as the Nokia E71. Calendar sync is supported for other devices like the iPhone and Windows Mobile, but not for S60 unfortunately. Check out what Google has to say, and look for the text that I bolded...

For iPhone and Windows Mobile devices, Google Sync allows you to get your Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar events to your phone. Once you set up Sync on your phone, it will automatically begin synchronizing your address book and calendar in the background, over-the-air, so you can attend to other tasks. Sync uses push technology so any changes or additions to your calendar or contacts are reflected on your device in minutes. The connection is always on so you don't have to manually sync your phone after Sync has been set up. This means that when your colleague changes the time of the TPS report cover sheets meeting, you'll know about it right away.

Since Sync is a two-way service, you can make changes on your phone or in your Google Account. Your calendar and contacts are always up-to-date, no matter where you are or what you're doing. Also, since your data is automatically backed up to your Google Account, it's securely stored even if you lose your phone.

For devices that support the open SyncML protocol, Google Sync will allow for two-way contacts synchronization. If you're a BlackBerry user, a version of Google Sync is already available.

That little snipped that I put in bold is what applies to us, only contacts is supported.

I haven't tried this out yet as I'm not entirely sure that I need this functionality. I don't heavily rely on my Google contacts for my device, and if I do need something I just use the Gmail application.

Sync Google Calendar & The E71

On the other hand, I heavily on Google Calendar. I've recently discovered GooSync thanks to E71 Fanatics Forum member hot_damn, at this post. I've been using it for a few weeks now and it works great. Everything is synced perfectly without any problems. It's free for the basic service, although they also have a premium service which I use. Click here to try out GooSync. I'll be giving a more detailed review in a couple of days.

Overhaul Your E71 Homescreen With Handy Shell

Do you ever get tired of the way your E71 homescreen looks? Maybe you want MORE from the homescreen to make your powerful device even more efficient? Thanks to the open programming capabilities of S60 and the creativity of developers these wants and needs are possible with Handy Shell.

Handy Shell completely overhauls the standard S60 homescreen. It allows you to see see the amount of your missed calls, emails, and messages. Weather notifications are shown, along with bluetooth status and 8 more shortcuts. Not to mention the clock is displayed much bigger.

The guy that runs Series60.ca has created a huge review of Handy Shell on the Nokia E71. Check out a screenshot showing how his homescreen has changed...

As you can see it looks like a completely different device.

Price? A hefty $45

Is it worth it?

Beautiful Connections: Exclusive E71 Application & A Few Sidenotes (Big News)

It's extremely rare when you see Nokia launch an application meant for a specific device. They've just launched a dedicated webpage for E71 owners showing off this new application, which is more of a fun gimic than being useful.

What's it all about?

Aaron report over at Symbian-Addict.com...

The application is simple to use, and its purpose is to spice up your text messages and makes for a beautiful connection. It allows the user to input a maximum of 40 characters of text, then it presents a visualization of that text with random and colorful waves, lines and dots. The fun part is to watch how these lines and waves slowly grow all through out the screen during the presentation. Here's a video demo...

Sidenotes & Big News:

1. I recently got engaged to my girlfriend! I took her to visit her favorite city - San Francisco - this past weekend and that is where I popped the question. Of course she said yes and we're extremely excited. What an amazing trip we had. Sadly I ended up leaving my E71 behind and opted to take the N82 (for obvious reasons, save for another post). Cheers to my new engagement!

2. The E71 forums are blowing up! If you haven't checked it out yet, what are you waiting for? We have nearly 500 members in just over 2 weeks. Thanks for everyone who has participated so far. In the coming days I'll be picking a few moderators and updating a few things in the forum. Visit the E71 Fanatics Forum.

3. Tons of articles are in my mind and on a to-do list. I should be getting some of these out this week. Things like Goosync, Remember the Milk, Nokia Image Exchange, a huge instant messaging article, facebook, music, + more. Sounds juicy right? Stay tuned!
