Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2 For E71 Out, Sync Bookmarks, Speed Dial, Settings

touch-link-donePerhaps the most advanced and useful application for the Nokia E71 & Symbian platform has just be updated to Beta 2. Of course I' am talking about the new Opera Mobile 10 which Nokia fanatics across the world have come to love.

One of the most highly demanded features of Opera Mobile has been bookmark sync – and now it’s here. This sync is not just for bookmarks. It also goes for certain settings and the popular speed dial feature that Opera users have come to love. Not to mention there is a very slick download manager to check out as well. The folks at Opera have really done themselves in with this latest release.

Note: If you've been using Opera Mini 5 - this is different & better.

Quote from today’s press release:

Opera today launched the second beta versions of Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10, available as free downloads. In this second beta release, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile users can now enjoy popular desktop features, such as Opera Link and the Download Manager, from their mobile phones.

With Opera Link, users can synchronize personal browser settings with their Opera desktop browser, as well as all their connected devices, ensuring that their bookmarks, Speed Dial and search engines are always accessible. The Download Manager gives users a better way to control and speed up downloads to mobile phones.

I love that Opera is seeing the value in syncing bookmarks and settings across the board. Now I just need to find a way to synchronize Opera Mobile with my Firefox/Chrome bookmarks. A 3 way sync might be necessary. I’m sure one of you readers can help me out there.

Check out a few screenshots (from S60v5 touch)…

Be sure to turn off “in-line editing” for this application to work properly with the E71’s secondary character buttons.

Use Internet From Your E71 To Connect An iPod Touch To The Web - Perfect Combination

Do you love your E71 so much that not even the mighty Nokia N900 tempts you to upgrade? You're not the only one. Many other E71 Fanatics don't see a need to dish out more money for a smartphone. But there is still that part of you that wants to keep up with the latest technology. It's the current trend & a standard for newer smartphones to include a large touchscreen display with great multimedia functionality. The iPhone (and iPod Touch) is very tempting with all of the cool apps that you can download and the eye candy, but for most E71 users the iPhone is majorly lacking and can't be used as a main device. The N97 is another option but not at $500. What is an E71 user to do who needs more options?

This may be the solution...

Tether Your E71's Interenet Connection To The Apple iPod Touch

That's right. You can turn your E71 & data connection into a walking WiFi hotspot, sharing the web with an iPod Touch or other multimedia device (like your laptop). Think of it like your internet router at home. The E71 can be the same thing. This can be done thanks to a Symbian application called JoikuSpot.

Description:

JoikuSpot is a mobile software solution that turns Nokia Smartphones to WLAN HotSpots. JoikuSpot software is installed directly to the phone. When switched on, laptops and iPods can establish instant and fast wireless internet connection via smartphone's JoikuSpot access point using phone's own 3G internet connection.

There are two versions of JoikuSpot. One is free and the Premium is $12.99. I recommend the commercial version if you plan on using it everyday and need something reliable.

Added benefits of commercial version:

- Securing the connection and setting authentication
- Secured access to corporate intrawebs (VPN)
- Email protocol support (e.g. Outlook & Gmail)
- Full support for all network access protocols such as Outlook, Skype, Gmail, YouTube, Messengers...
- No forced default landing page
- Adjustable settings (e.g. access point naming)
- 3G Auto-reconnect
- 100% customizable for operator and corporate whitelabeling and licencing

I've tested JoikuSpot Premium with my brothers Apple iTouch and it works perfectly. I have full access to all the iPhone applications that need a data connection and the web browser. Of course it would be smart to have an unlimited data connection on your E71 to avoid high charges.

Apple iPod Touch

Most of you already have an iPod Touch. If you don't I came across this 1-day only deal at Amazon for the Apple iPod touch 8 GB (2nd Generation). It's on sale for $158.99 - down from $199.99. If you miss this deal Amazon always has decent prices on their entire iPod touch lineup.

Do any of you have this combination and use it on a daily basis? With the E71's great battery life and a spare charger this can really be a powerful duo. Best of both worlds.

Nokia E71 Firmware Version 400.21.013 Released, Mostly Fixes & Improvements

Over the Thankgiving Day holiday weekend Nokia decided to release the new E71 firmware, version 400.21.013. The timing makes perfect sense because Thanksgiving is a North American holiday and the firmware wasn't released for the E71-2 which is the North American version. At least it's not showing up on my Nokia Software Updater screen. Maybe some of you are having better luck. Congrats to the rest of the E71 Fanatics around the world who are able to update.

Before You Ask...
NO! This update does not add Feature Pack 2 as found on the Nokia E72.

Backup Your Data
As always - be sure to backup your data before the update. You will lose all of your applications and settings so keep that in mind and give yourself some time to re-install all of your favorite applications & themes.

Have you updated your E71 with the latest firmware? Let us know how it goes and what differences you see.

Official Facebook Application For The Nokia E71 & E72... Finally

Well it's finally here - the official Facebook application for the Nokia E71 (and E72). I'm assuming this app will work on all S60v3 devices including the N86. For some reason Nokia decided NOT to announce this news, even though their loyal E71 users have been waiting for this since it was preinstalled on the N97 months ago.

Description:

Facebook ® for Nokia E71/E72 lets you keep up with your friends right at your
fingertips. Update your status, see what your friends are up to, upload photos,
check messages and lookup phone numbers when you need them anytime and anywhere.
Facebook allows you to comment on your friend’s statuses, RSVP to e vent invites
and confirm or deny friend requests. The Facebook for Nokia E71/E72 brings
Facebook directly to your phone. If Facebook is not available for your device,
please check Ovi Store.

I haven't got a chance to test out the application yet because my SIM card is currently in the N97. I'm assuming it works just like the version I'm using right now. Thanks to CJ and one of his readers for the great find! Be sure to check out the ZOMG its CJ blog for tons of Nokia news and tips.

Find it in the Ovi Store or click here for the direct link.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this app since I'm not able to test it out right now.

Just Black, N900, & E72 Themes For Nokia E71

It’s been quite some time since I posted up some new themes, probably because I haven’t seen many that have really caught my eye. However, in the past few weeks there have been a handful of Nokia E71 themes posted up over at TehkSeven.net and some of them are beautiful. The simple & lightweight theme called “Just Black” is my current favorite and a few others look great as well.

Check em out!…

That Maemo 5 N900 theme is also a personal favorite. I was extremely impressed by the theme that Nokia created for the N900 and was hoping somebody would recreate it. Thanks tehk!

If you haven't already heard about the new Nokia N900 be sure to check out this epic video.

Maemo is what's powering Nokia's newest flagship instead of Symbian S60 like the N97 and E71. Nokia announced the N900 is now shipping to retailers this week and should be hitting the shelves anytime. You can check out the N900 product page at Amazon if you’re interested

Hope you enjoy these themes for your E71!

Security: How To Remote Lock Your E71 From Another Phone

Let’s say you leave your Nokia E71 at school and don’t want your classmates seeing those luvvy-duvvy text messages you send to your girlfriend. Or maybe you can’t find your phone and don’t want anybody using it. The E71 has a great security feature called Remote Lock built in. Many people overlook or don’t notice this feature, but I think it’s a must-have for everyone with an expensive smartphone and sensitive data.

What does remote lock do? It allows you to send a unique message to your phone from another phone and it will lock.

You need to create a special phrase like “locke71” or anything you can remember. If you need to lock your phone so that nobody can access it or the files on the memory card you can send an SMS with that phrase you created from any phone to your phone and it will completely lock up immediately. The only way to unlock it is to use the phone’s lock code that you will create if you haven’t already.

Screenshot0078 Screenshot0079 Screenshot0080

Be sure to make a lock code that you can remember. The default code is 12345 if you have never set one up before. If you forget your lock code I do not know how to unlock the phone. Maybe someone here knows better than I do.

Does anybody already use this feature? Has anyone ever needed to use this feature?

Black Nokia E72 Available For Preorder $469, Still Not Attractive To Some

Just a quick heads up to the E71 users (few it seems) who are making the jump to the Nokia E72. Nokia’s newest Eseries flagship device has finally went on sale at Amazon for under $500. The E72 features a 5mp camera, 3.5mm audio jack, usb charging, slightly bigger keys, a newer version of Symbian S60 (including icons and menu transitions) and of course a slightly updated design.

I really wish Nokia would’ve went balls out with this “E71 upgrade” and added a 2.8” screen, heck I would’ve been happy with a 2.6” screen. For me all the other upgrades are worth it, although I agree with all the naysayers that the Nokia E72 is what the E71 should have been in the very first place.

Nokia E72 Unlocked Phone-- US Version with Full Warranty (Zodium Black)

Regardless, it is what it is. No other device I’ve owned has ever been as reliable and stable as my E71. The E72 will only improve upon that.

However, those looking for a new device might want to see what the upcoming N97 2.0 firmware has in store for us. Mobile Fanatic “EverythingBlaxx” has recently got a chance to try out the firmware due to drop next week and is mightily impressed, even saying the firmware brings the N97 to E71 stability. Not to mention the N900 is “supposed” to ship this month as well.

Nokia E72 Hands On Video Demonstration

While news of the E72 has been scarce and having 0 announcements at Nokia World 2009, I cant get my mind off the amazing E-series handset that is looming in the shadows. While I did find the N900 interesting I feel the E72 is going to be even better. For the past year I have been using the E71, and its been one of the best phones I have ever used. The speed, the style, the keyboard, everything (but the camera!) is simple amazing. Although I own the N97, I find it hard to pickup since its capabilities are much more limited and I feel the E71 is simpler and more accessible.

Luckily some new video popped up today courtesy of FoneArena that shows the interface and how quickly things are being processed. The UI is simply gorgeous (the fade effects are exactly whats needed to bring life to S60). Also there is a bit of web surfing and Nokia Messaging, plus Optical Navi in action (who needs a touch screen when you have that?!). This video shows us exactly what the 600mhz processor is going to accomplish. A smoother, more stable experience. So in short what we are used to with the E71 but BETTER! While we bide our time for the release, enjoy the short clip below.

Preorder The Nokia N900 Now At Amazon

For those of you looking for a new form factor or just another device to compliment your E71 you might find it interesting that Amazon.com is taking preorders for the Nokia N900 right now. Surprisingly the device is selling for under $600, I thought it would go for over $650 given it’s great specs and popularity. Amazon currently has the N900 priced at $588.99 as shown in the link below, but that price can change at any time.

Nokia N900 Mobile Computer Unlocked Cell Phone

Features:

  • 800 × 480 pixel resolution
  • TI OMAP 3430: ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX with OpenGL ES 2.0 support
  • Up to 1GB of application memory (256 MB RAM, 768 MB virtual memory)
  • Full QWERTY onscreen keyboard
  • Quad-band GSM EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz
  • Maximum speed PS 10/2 Mbps (DL/UL)
  • Adobe Flash™ 9.4 support
  • Video recording at up to 848 × 480 pixels (WVGA) and up to 25fps
  • Video playback file formats: .mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp; codecs: H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263

Video:

As you can see it does not feature the Symbian S60 operating system. Instead it runs Maemo, which is what Nokia has used in it’s internet tablets such as the N810. The N900 is a beast considering my home PC only has 512mb RAM and a 40gb hardrive. Add a 16gb microSD card in the N900 and you have yourself 48gb. Yikes!

AT&T Users Beware: The N900 has 3g bands for North America – but they only work with T-Mobile. No clue why Nokia chose to go this route after so many of it’s unlocked smartphone fans switched to AT&T.

I’m curious to know how many of you are interested in the Nokia N900 as your next smartphone.

Visit the Nokia N900 preorder page for more details.

E71 Browser: Opera Mini 5 Adds Copy & Paste, Multiple Tabs, Plus A New Look

Looking for a new browser for the E71? Already a hardcore Opera Mini user? Then you’ll be happy to know that Opera Mini 5 is now available for download and boy does it bring some solid updates. Opera is calling it “the next generation of mobile browsing”. Most dumbphone owners should be ecstatic about this latest release, but even smartphone people like myself are extremely impressed by what this browser brings to the table.

New Features Include:

  • tabbed browsing
  • copy/paste text on a page
  • UI update from previous version
  • password manager
  • speed dial w/ thumbnails
  • plus all the other great features Opera Mini has always had.

Since this is a beta version, you won’t be able to sync/import bookmarks. Good thing is when you install this version it won’t overwrite the previous version so don’t worry about losing bookmarks.

Copy/Paste From The Browser

It’s amazing that Opera Mini – a java app – can give us this function and the built in S60 browser cannot.

Regardless, here is how to copy/paste from Opera on the E71:

Hold down the shift key and use the navipad to select the text you want. Copy option should be visible on softkey at this point. Then press and hold shift to paste...

Thanks to @jon_iz on twitter for the tip.

Don’t forget to modify all your settings. There are a ton of options to choose from.

Bluetooth Headsets For The E71: So Many Choices, Which To Choose?

Picking a bluetooth heads to compliment your Nokia E71 can be a challenging task since there are so many choices out there. There are many different brands and types to choose from, even Nokia is in the bluetooth market. Some of you may be looking for a good bluetooth headset just for making calls and others may be looking for a killer stereo bluetooth headset so you can avoid wires and the uncommon 2.5mm headset jack. The sound out of my stereo bluetooth seems to be much better than the headphones that came in the box with the E71.

I’ve personally been using the same stereo headset for over a year – the Nokia BH-501. I’ll show you that pair, along with a few others from Nokia and a chart of the best sellers.

Nokia BH-501

When you need your ears for something else, the headphones fold up for compact storage.

Obviously I highly recommend this pair since it’s the one I use. Only drawback is the lack of music playback buttons.

I recently asked E71 Fanatics followers on Twitter which headset they personally use. I got back a few different responses, all with good feedback. Here are a few recommendations:

(Can't view chart is some rss readers.)

Top Selling Bluetooth Headsets

Whenever I shop online I make sure to watch the bestsellers list to see what other consumers are buying and read reviews. The Amazon.com bluetooth bestsellers list shows the Plantronics taking the top spot, following by Samsung and Motorola. That list includes standard bluetooth headsets, not only stereo.

What’s Your Favorite?

I would really like to know which bluetooth headset the readers use and if you like it. In about a month or too I’ll be shopping for a new pair myself, as of right now I’m looking at the 503’s by Nokia.
